The Cal Tech chemists initiated the reaction with a pump laser pulse, which energized the reactant. The first probe pulse hits the molecules a few femtosecond later and is followed by many thousands more, every 10 fs or so, for the duration of the reaction. Each probe pulse results in an absorption spectrum and changes in the chemical bonds.
