A political problem that the Lacandon face is the Mexican government.
The government has allotted the Lacandon a great deal of land
through the historic ejido land system, a system similar to the Indian reservations
in the United States. However, with the tremendous demands by
thousands of immigrants into Chiapas, the government needs huge amounts
of new land to maintain political stability. The historic ejido land grants are
an easy target; therefore the government is tempting the Lacandon to relinquish
their land. Many of the poverty-stricken Lacandon are falling for the
government’s offer.
