Shortly after their appearance in the early Ordovician the Bryozoan underwent a great burst of evolution, resulting in the establishment of the early Stenolaemata. Among them, the Trepostomata, or 'stony bryozoans', were the most abundant in the Lower Palaeozoic time. They were then dominated by other groups, in particular the Cystoporata, the Cryptostomata and the Fenestrata.
