Long Sapao is a famous and best-preserved tradition that has been practised since ancient times, and is officially known as the Loi Krathong Festival throughout the Kingdom of Thailand. Organised by the Lampang Municipality, Long Sapao is an annual festival which is held during mid-November and participated by all sectors of the province. This immemorial custom of floating flowers and other sacrifice offerings in buoyant decorations (krathong) in the river is aimed at washing away all bad omens – the purging of all evil deeds and misfortune. The celebration of the Long Sapao Festival or Loi Krathong in Lampang has existed over a long period of time. Each year, the festival is succeeded by the beauty contests of large decorated krathongs, and many beautiful ladies dressed in colourful and elaborate costumes will join the contests by sitting on the large decorated krathongs. These magnificent krathongs along with the charming ladies dressed immaculately will parade through the streets around the city centre in Mueang Lampang District. The krathong parade also features dramatic sound and light shows and fireworks which will add up to a captivating performance along the streets throughout the entire city.
