Last!decennia,!labor!markets!have!been!confronted!with!fundamental!changes!as!a!consequence!of!an! increasing!participation!of!women.!!One!of!the!most!observable!changes!is!the!evolution!towards!the! dual!earner!family!away!from!the!breadwinner!model.!This!dual!earner!model!as!the!main!family!model! has!put!the!concept!of!work"life!balance!at!the!forefront.!Socio"economic!literature!studying!work"life! balance!mainly!focuses!on!individual!characteristics!as!relevant!explanations.!It!is!hereby!assumed!that! factors!such!as!flexibility!and!gender!role!expectations!contribute!to!the!individual!work"life!balance.! However,!within!the!empirical!studies!done!so!far!on!the!topic,!the!work"life!balance!is!considered!as!an! individual!problem.!More!specific,!characteristics!of!the!family!such!as!partners!‘overtime!and!division!of! household!work!are!less!frequently!considered.!The!paper!directly!deals!with!this!gap!by!investigating! work"life! balance! in! the! non"profit! sector! combining! explanations! in! the! literature! and! family! characteristics.!Based!on!a!quantitative!analysis!of!a!sample!of!nurses!in!Flanders,!the!paper!will!give! insight!into!the!importance!of!family!characteristics!and!the!interactions!between!work"!and!family" related!factors!for!work"life!balance.!
