RMP determined by leak channels
•Changes in the MP from the resting level result from gated ion channels
•At this resting level the membrane is polarized because the inside surface of the membrane is negative with respect to the outside.
•If the potential becomes more negative (e.g. -90 mV) the membrane is said to be hyperpolarized.
•When the membrane becomes less negative (e.g. -50 mV) the membrane is said to be depolarized.
•After the membrane is depolarized, when it returns to its resting level it is repolarized.
