The phylogenetic position of bathyteuthids is interesting because bathyteuthids share characteristics with both oceanic squids (oegopsids) and neritic squids (myopsids) (Seibel et al., 2004). Carlini et al. (2000) suggested, based on partial nucleotide sequences of Actin I and II genes, that Bathyteuthis was the sister group to Chtenopteryx spp., and these two groups appeared most closely related to myopsids and sepiolids. However, some other molecular phylogenetic analyses indicate that Bathyteuthis is the sister taxon to order Oegopsida ( Strugnell et al., 2005 and Lindgren, 2010).
