Doctoral music education plays a key role in the preparation of scholarship in music teaching and learning, and in training teachers of future music educators who will be responsible for the growth of music education in the nation. Representing the highest academic degree in music offered in higher education, the doctoral degree is a degree for music educators who hope to be employed in teaching positions in colleges and universities. Due to the shortage of music educators, the paucity of graduate music programs in Thailand, and the lack of music teacher education research, there are several challenges for those who become involved in the preparation of doctoral students, to train them to practise at high levels in the Thai context. This pressing need provided the thrust for this research project.
