43 nations signed the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the
Ozone Layer in 1987 to eventually phase out CFCs
DuPont discontinued the production of CFC in 1993
CFCs were replaced by hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs – still ODS) and
hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs – no ODS but potent greenhouse gases)
