What is Cooperative Education?
Cooperative Education is a supervised, counseling centered program that offers students the
opportunity to alternate periods of academic study with periods of word closely related to
their major field of study. The combination of academic study and work produces an overall
learning experience that gives greater meaning to students’ studies and more direction to career
development. Students earn cooperation education credits by integrating classroom theory with
planned learning experiences in the community to achieve learning based on the curriculum
expectations of the related course.
The Co-op Program enables students to adapt to skills learned in the classroom to actual work
experience. By working on a chosen field for a few months, students acquire valuable insights
into whether the chosen field is a suitable career path. In addition, students develop confidence,
communication skills, and a network of contacts that can greatly enhance their employment
opportunities upon graduation.
• Cooperative Education is a Work-Based Learning program that offers students the
opportunity to work in the professional field.
• Cooperative Education also provides “hands on” experience, with periods of full-time
productive employment in business, industry, and agencies.
