2.2. Chemicals
HPLC grade methanol and acetonitrile from Mallinckrodt
were used to prepare the mobile phase, together with 0.2%
metaphosphoric acid of reagent grade quality from Carlo Erba.
All reagents were used without any further purification.
Pharmaceutical/cosmetic formulations were developed as
a topical oil-in-water (o/w) emulsion and aqueous gel. The
qualitative composition of the preparations involved: (1) o/w
emulsion, emulsifying wax NF, ethylhexyl stearate, mineral
oil, sodium carboxymethyl betaglucan, HEDTA (N-2-
hydroxyethyl-ethylenediaminetriacetic acid), water (and) glycerin
(and) sodium lactate (and) TEA-lactate (and) serine (and)
lactic acid (and) urea (and) sorbitol (and) sodium chloride
(and) lauryl diethylenediaminoglycine (and) lauryl aminopropylglycine
(and) allantoin, phenoxyethanol (and) methylparaben
(and) ethylparaben (and) propylparaben (and) butylparaben,
Vitamin C (ascorbic acid, 10%, w/w), glutathione, sodium
metabisulfite, methyldibromo glutaronitrile, fragrance and distilled water; (2) aqueous gel, hydroxyethylcellulose, methylparaben,
HEDTA, sorbitol, water (and) glycerin (and) sodium
lactate (and) TEA-lactate (and) serine (and) lactic acid (and) urea
(and) sorbitol (and) sodium chloride (and) lauryl diethylenediaminoglycine
(and) lauryl aminopropylglycine (and) allantoin,
Vitamin C (ascorbic acid, 10%, w/w), glutathione, sodium
metabisulfite, methyldibromo glutaronitrile, fragrance and distilled
water. All components were obtained from commercial
sources and used as received, without any further purification.
The ascorbic acid concentration was chosen in agreement
with literature that demonstrated that Vitamin C 10.0% (w/w)
for topical application reduced the erythema induced by UV-A
and UV-B radiation (compared with a control) [1,16–18].
Pure water was produced by a Millipore Milli-Q Plus System
(Molsheim, France).
