Rheumatoid arthritis (RA), a devastating illness, can have lifelong and potentially disabling consequences for individuals diagnosed with this disease. In 2005, an estimated 1.29 million adults in the United States were diagnosed with RA.[1] Affecting approximately 1% of the population worldwide, RA has been diagnosed in all ethnic groups.[2,3] Onset of RA can occur at any age, but approximately 80% of cases are diagnosed between the ages of 30 and 60.[1,2]
