Surfactants are widely used to enhance enzyme production. In this study, PEG and Tween clearly improved laccase production in T. trogii Berk S0301, which agreed with studies using Pycnoporussanguineus ( Pointing et al., 2000), T. trogii ( Levin and Forchiassin, 2001) and Ganoderma sp. kk-02 ( Sharma et al., 2005). It is worth noting that the laccase activity was significantly increased by 5.6-fold in T. trogii Berk S0301 upon the addition of 7 g L−1 Tween 80. Dekker et al. (2007) have demonstrated that Tween 80 can act as not only the surfactant but also the sole C source in Botryosphaeriarhodina MAMB-05. Whether Tween 80 acted as a surfactant and/or as a C source in T. trogii Berk S0301 is still unknown, but it is clear that Tween 80 is a good inducer for laccase production in this strain.
