In infancy the well-nurtured child develops a sense of basic trust in himself and in his environment. He learns that the people around him will protect him and take care of him, and that through his actions and communications he can get his needs met. He develops what Dr. T. Berry Brazelton has termed a"sense of efficacy"--the ex pectation that his efforts will pay off, that they will be appreciated by the important. people in his life, that it is worth trying and trying again, even if he sometimes fails.
