Needing to give your boss feedback can be tricky. Your criticism needs to be constructive and you need to say it in the right way. If you don’t, you could be in trouble.
Start off by sorting out your feedback. Is it insightful? Is it constructive? What are the risks of giving feedback to your boss? If the answer is yes, you now need to find the right way to approach him/her.
Let’s hope that you have a good relationship with your boss and s/he is open-minded to receiving what you have to say.
Unsolicited feedback is never a good idea. If your boss has asked you for feedback it’ll be an easier conversation. If it has not been asked for and you’d like to offer your boss advice; ask if s/he would like it. Let’s look at how to go about things if the feedback is welcomed.
Make sure that when you speak you say things like "We felt" instead of "You made us feel". Don’t make accusatory sentences. Don’t point fingers and focus on your perspective. Let your boss know how things are from your perspective – this can be invaluable as it can reconnect your boss to his/her colleagues if they are disconnected in any way.
And most importantly, when giving your boss feedback always approach it with a positive attitude and keep things civil. If your boss gets snappy – hold your tongue and don’t start an argument.
