Prayao is the one of ancient city in the north of Thailand. The former name is เมืองภูกาม. This city has been here for more than 900 years old, it is the same time as เชียงแสน district and เชียงราย province. Prayao was the develop city in ขุนงำเมือง period, but later it has been the colony of other kingdoms until Bangkok era. There are 9 districts in the province; the main career here is agriculture. The interesting attractions are กว๊านพะเยา, national park and เวียงลอ historic site and ติโลกอาราม temples there. This province also has the interesting life of ชาวไทยลื้อ, who emigrate from the south of China. ชาวไทยลื้อ lived ลื้อหลวง city and then the emigrate to สิบสองปันนา. The leader name เจ้าเจื๋องหาญ could combine the small city to be the kingdom, called เซอลี่. However, ชาวไทยลื้อ must emigrate again to Prayao, when China changes the regime from kingdome to communist. So we can see the ไทยลื้อ life in the old fashion at this province. Another interesting thing is กว๊านพะเยา legend. The legends talk about the bhodisattva in the golden bird, called นกเอี้ยง. The bird always fly and live around the pond alone to do mediation, but the hawks killed the Bhodisattva and died in the pond, so กว๊านพะเยา has another name is หนองเอี๊ยง. When the time passes, the Buddha visited the กว๊านพะเยา for teaching the Buddhist scriptures. The man in Prayao gave the Buddha respect and offered the food without water. So the monk had to go to find the water at the pond, but the Naga did not allow the monk to take the water. So the Buddha just invent himself as the large body and step on the Naga, so the Naga got hurt and slat his tail around the area until become the lake, call กว๊าน or กว๊านพะเยา. The Naga also promised that after 5000 years, he will build the Buddha image at this lake, so he gave the gold to the couple old man and woman to build the Buddha image name พระเจ้าตนหลวง at ศรีโคมคำ temple. Nowadays, this lake has the area over 3,000 acres and is the main irrigation system of this province.
