However, due to the light weight of plastic products compared to other material alternatives, such as glass in bottles, or metal in cars, plastic products also play an important role in reducing oil consumed and emissions released into the air in transportation (Waldhauer 2008; Creasey 2011). The available data published on plastics recycling remains patchy (Khoo, Tan and Chng 2010; Williams, Heidrich and Sallis 2010; Welle 2011), although what is clear is that recycling rates vary dramatically between countries (Lazarevic et al. 2010; Lehmann 2010). Plastic recycling is often confined to clean rigid plastics and although a range of established plastic recycling processes are available, most processes require rigorous segregation of the various types of plastics to produce a final product (Williams, Heidrich and Sallis 2010; WRAP 2013).
