Requirements of reactive power compensations for long
and medium transmission lines at subsea are significant and
are analyzed. Suitable techniques to overcome the problem
are discussed since it is not feasible to provide mid-line com-
pensations using Flexible AC Transmission (FACT) devices
unlike in onshore power transmission facilities. The reactive
power compensation requirements would increase the Root
Mean Square (RMS) value of the current drawn through the
transmission line, which in turn decides the losses occurring
in the transmission line.
