the close phylogenetic relationships between coccolepidids
(including †Coccolepis bucklandi and
†“Coccolepis” groeberi, the latter representing a
new genus, described herein) and the Acipenseriformes,
and Hilton et al. (2004) also suggested
possible affinities of †Coccolepis with the chondrosteans
as defined by Patterson (1982), i.e., the
group including the Acipenseriformes (sturgeons
and paddlefishes) and their fossil relatives. The
