The tropical fruit, Longkong, is very similar to Langsat and Duku which all belong to the Lansium Domesticum family. Longkong is cultivated throughout most of S.E. Asia. Longkong fruit is very slightly larger than Langsat with a thicker, easier to peel skin and does not have the sticky latex that Langsat skin contains.
Lansium Domesticum trees grow to about 15 meters in height and its flowers are hermaphrodite. The fruits are round to slightly oval and grow in clusters of up to 30 fruits. Longkong fruit has a green skin when not yet ripe turning to a yellowish brown when fully ripe. The white flesh of the Longkong is arranged in 5-6 translucent sections and may contain one or two rather bitter seeds. There are also some seedless varieties available. Longkong has a sweet taste with a hint of sourness which becomes sweeter as the fruit fully ripens. The Longkong season is from early August to October.
