Recently, antioomycete compounds active against
Phytophthora sp. were extensively screened from
microbial metabolites. A manumycin-type antibiotic
that contains a multifunctional mC7 N unit as its central
structural element (Fig. 3) has been isolated from
the culture of Streptomyces flaveus (Hwang et al.,
1996). The strain demonstrated a high level of inhibitory
activity against Phytophthora capsici Leonian and
a broad antifungal spectrum against several plant
pathogenic fungi, including M. grisea. Cladosporium
cucumerinum Ellis & Arthur and Alternaria mali Roberts.
The hyphal growth of P. capsici was inhibited by
more than 50% at 10 lg ⁄ ml and by 90% at
50 lg ⁄ ml. The simplicity of the chemical structure
and its broad antifungal spectrum provide the possibility
as a lead compound for further fungicide development
