The inter-row of a drip-irrigated orchard is exclusively rain fed, implying that in a Mediterranean-type climate, the interrow
soil will be much drier than that within the row (the in-row) for most of the growing season (Ruiz-Sánchez et al., 2005). Hence, to maximise plant nutritional benefits in these climates, organic amendment is best applied using a localised placement technique (Parr, 1989)
