3.3. Soluble sugars
Soluble sugar (sucrose, glucose and fructose) concentrations
were, in general, higher in albedo than in flavedo, excepting for
fructose concentration at 3min time–dose. Glucose was the more
abundant soluble sugar, while sucrose and fructose were present in
nearly equal amounts, excepting at 3min time–dose for the latter
(Fig. 2a–c). During the UV-B treatment, soluble sugars were differentially
affected in both tissues. In flavedo, the sucrose and fructose
content increased sharply at 3min UV-B time–dose reaching maxima
values of 30.1 and 52.4mol g−1 FW (3.4- and 5.3-fold higher
compared with the control), whereas the glucose increase was
much less pronounced with a maximum content of 56.4mol g−1
FW (62.3% higher than control). However, at 5min time–dose the
sucrose content of irradiated flavedo was significantly lower than
the control flavedo. At 3min time–dose the content of sucrose and
glucose in albedo tissue increased up to 38.5 and 116.8mol g−1
FW (2.9-fold and 54.4% higher than control), whereas the fructose
content did not show any change compared with the control
(Fig. 2a–c). However, the fructose content showed a faster increase
than other sugars reaching amaximumincrease at 1 min time–dose
(27.5mol g−1 FW, 89.2% higher compared with the control). The
glucose/fructose ratio was significantly different between flavedo
and albedo ranging from 1.08 to 3.50 in the former and from 2.85
to 7.64 in the latter (data not shown).
