hazardous bariumandcyanidewasteintoalandfill ataCommonHazardousWasteTreatmentStorage
DisposalFacility(CHWTSDF).Thewastewasgeneratedduringtheprocessofhardeningofsteel
componentsandcontainscyanide(reactive)andbarium(toxic)asmajorcontaminants.Inthepresent
study chemical fixationofthecontaminantswascarriedout.Thecyanidewastreatedbyalkalichlori-
nation withcalciumhypochloriteandbariumbyprecipitationwithsodiumsulfateasbariumsulfate.The
pretreatedmixturewasthensolidified andstabilizedbybindingwithacombinationofslagcement,
ordinary Portlandcementand fly ash,moldedintoblocks(5

5 cm)andcuredforaperiodof3,7
and 28days.The final experimentswereconductedwith18recipemixturesofwaste þ additive:binder
(W:B)ratios.TheW:Bratiosweretakenas80:20,70:30and50:50.Theoptimumproportionsofadditives
and binderswere finalized onthebasisofthecriteriaofunconfined compressivestrengthandleach-
ability.TheleachabilitystudieswereconductedusingtheToxicityCharacteristicLeachingProcedure.The
blocks wereanalyzedforvariousphysicalandleachablechemicalparametersattheendofeachcuring
period.Basedontheresultsoftheanalysis,tworecipemixtures,withcompositions e 50% of
[waste þ (120gCa(OCl)2 þ 290 gNa2SO4) kg1 of waste] þ 50% ofbinders,werevalidatedfor in situ
