4.2. Supplier partnership
As Lucent outsourced manufacturing operations for improved
efficiencies, attention was focused on the environmental
performance of suppliers to ensure that they meet legal and
customer requirements and to minimize the risk of business interruption.
In order to ensure that Lucent products conform to
environmental requirements and Lucent’s sustainability goals,
Lucent has established a rigorous partnership with its
suppliers.

With the enactment of the EU RoHS Directive, the need for
supplier partnerships has been recognized throughout the industry.
This in turn has heightened the awareness of SCN
and the role they play in the PBEMS, enabling greater efficiencies
in supplier management from a product eco-design
viewpoint.
Suppliers are not directly included in the scope of the
PBEMS and do not participate in ISO 14001 [1] registrar
audits. However, suppliers who make design-impacting decisions
are encouraged to apply eco-design principles to their
own processes. In addition, Lucent has added environmental
language clauses to contacts with component vendors, contract
manufacturers, and hardware suppliers to ensure environmental
requirements are met.
