It might seem unreasonable to draw any conclusions from the example of Pat Tillman. This is a very unusual case. After all, very few people ever become professional football players, and of those few only one quit to join the army. Nevertheless, this case does remind us that there can be more to one's career than money and fame. The case is also interesting for a little noticed aspect. Tillman turned down a higher-paying job with another business out of a felt loyalty to his present employer. While the decisions to join the army and accept a lower-paying job are understandable, it would be worth asking if they were reasonable. Why would a rational person do such things?
