The disease is transmitted by aphids as well as by mechanical means. The green peach aphid, the most common insect on papaya in Hawaii, is the major insect vector of the ringspot virus. The melon aphid (Aphis gossypii), the bean aphid (A. medicaginis), and A. rumicis are also vectors of the disease (10), but they are not as important as the green peach aphid (Myzus persicae).
