The prevalence of ECC in most developed countries
ranges between 1 to 12 percent. On the other
hand, it reaches 70 to 90 percent in many developing
countries. This disparity is likely due to lack of
access to fluoridated water and dental services, and
differences in socio-economic status, 6 as is currently
the case in Indonesia. According to WHO in 1995,
90.5 percent of preschool children in Indonesia in
urban areas and 95.9 percent in rural areas were affected
by ECC and had DMFT scores of 7.92 and
7.98 respectively
