TOKYO - Three Japanese companies said Wednesday they had won a project to install a new passenger railway line in Bangkok, and maintain it for 10 years.
Marubeni Corp, Toshiba Corp, and East Japan Railway Co will work together on the Purple Line railway, a 23-kilometre overhead line connecting Bang Yai district in Nonthaburi and Bang Sue, the companies said in a statement.
The 40-billion-yen (12.6 billion baht) project covers 63 railroad cars, supply of equipment for the line and 10 years of maintenance services.
The project will be paid for with a yen loan worth 79 billion yen, provided by the Japanese government, Kyodo News agency reported.
Trains are expected to start carrying passengers on the line in 2016.
The line is under the concession of the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA). Bangkok Metro Plc signed an 82.6-billion-baht contract with the MRTA in September for the procurement, installation, operation and maintenance of the line.
