The Horizontal Falls or Horizontal Waterfalls (nicknamed the “Horries”) is the name given to a natural phenomenon on the coast of the Kimberley region in Western Australia. There is one attraction in Broome that can be found nowhere else in the world, a site that alone makes the trip worthwhile: the horizontal falls. This is a real bucket list attraction so make time to come and see this incredible attraction.
The horizontal falls are formed by two small gaps in parallel islands along the Broome coastline. They are created when the big tides force the water through the narrow gaps between islands, forcing huge amounts of water through a narrow gap. It really is breathtaking to see nature’s force at work. The noise and the fury of the millions of litres of water pouring through the gap is really something to behold.
