Cholera in particular has been a major problem in Ghana since the first bacteriological case was reported in September, 1970. From 1999 to 2005 alone, Ghana's Ministry of Health officially reported a total of 26,924 cases and 620 deaths to the World Health Organization (WHO). From January to October 2014, cholera outbreak in Ghana has hit a record 17,000 cases with over 150 deaths, which is the worst in 30 years
In relation to typhoid, the findings supports Feglo, Frimpong, and Essel-Ahun (2004) who showed that even some food vendors and workers in these food businesses have tested positive for Salmonella paratyphii which causes this foodborne illness. To minimise the incidences of typhoid, the Metropolitan Public Health Department certifies food handlers by examining them for the absence of S. paratyphii.
