All experimental procedures were reviewed and approved
by the University of Manitoba Animal Care
Protocol Management and Review Committee, and
pigs were handled in accordance with the guidelines
described by the Canadian Council on Animal Care
(1993).
Two experiments were conducted at the T. K. Cheung
Center for Animal Science Research, University
of Manitoba. The EECM evaluated was obtained from
a commercial company (Associated Proteins, Ste. Agathe,
Manitoba, Canada), whereas the SECM was obtained
from a local supplier and was included in the
study as a reference because it is commonly used in
swine diets and its nutritive value is well characterized
(Spragg and Mailer, 2007; Canola Council of Canada,
2009). One batch of SECM and of EECM was used for
both experiments. All diets in both experiments were
fed as mash. The pigs used in both experiments were
Genesus (Yorkshire-Landrace female × Duroc male)
obtained from the Glenlea Swine Research Unit, University
of Manitoba
