Group XI – Neiserria, Chromobacteria and related bacteria
These are non-motile aerobes. Neiserria are always cocci. Other genera are rod shaped but change to cocci in the stationary phase of growth.
Neisseria are free living saphrophytes that live in the oral cavities (mouths) and moist areas on the bodies of animals.
Neisseria gonorrhaoeae is a serious
Neisseria meningititis is a pathogen that can attack the membranes of animal brains. The disease is often fatal.
Species of Acinetobacter are found in soil and water. Others are human pathogens and are sometimes responsible for nosocomial infections.
Some species of Acinetobacter and Moraxella move by ‘jumping’. They make a brief motion that propels them 1-5 m.
