With a track record of helping thousands of people find a room every day, sooner or later, we were bound to attract the attention of someone who is less than honest.
Our security systems are like Fort Knox, but it’s worth being aware of the risks.
So here are a few general safety pointers:
Does the rent sound way too low for the area?
Is all contact made by email or instant messenger?
Are they unable to arrange a viewing of the property?
Do they ask for you to send a deposit [via Western Union] before you've seen the room?
Answer 'YES' to these questions and there's a chance that the person is a crook. You should stop all contact immediately and report them to EasyRoommate.com. I’ll make sure they're kicked off the site.
Here’s a few do’s and don’ts:
Never send any personal documents such as your passport or driving licence
Always view a room before committing to any deposit
Always follow the advice we give here http://www.easyroommate.com/misc/emailscam.aspx.
Remember, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is. Don't fall for it!! If you have any reason to believe another member is involved in a scam, please flag the profile and I’ll investigate.
We want to make sure you have nothing but a positive experience of Easyroommate. So stay safe and good luck with your search.
All the best,
Victoria
