J4B: Rated Importance of a Role Characteristic. Other investigations have focused on particular attributes of a role. It has often been found that subjective well-being is more strongly correlated with the absence or presence of a particular attribute if that attribute is viewed as more personally salient. With respect to job satisfaction, this moderating role was demonstrated many years ago, although it has rarely been considered in recent research, Linked to Locke’s (1969) perspective, Mobley and Locke (1970) asked about satisfaction with particular features of a job and the personal importance of those features. Correlations between the perceived level of a job featured and satisfaction with that job feature (and with overall work satisfaction) were found to be significantly greater in the case of features that were viewed as more personally salient.
