Quantification was performed by external calibration with
standards. All carotenoid standards (antheraxanthin, a-carotene,
b-carotene, 9-, 13-, and 15-cis-b-carotene, f-carotene, a-cryptoxan
thin, b-cryptoxanthin, lutein, mutatoxanthin, neoxanthin, violaxanthin
and zeaxanthin) (CaroteNature, Lupsingen, Switzerland), were
dissolved in 200 lL dichloromethane and further diluted in methanol-acetone
mixture (2/1 (v/v), containing 0.1% (w/v) BHT) to give a
final concentration of 200 lg mL1
. The calibration curve was constructed
for each carotenoid standard with concentration ranging
from 0.2–60 lg mL1
. The total content of carotenoids was calculated
as the sum of the individual carotenoid concentrations. The
content of carotenoids with unidentified peaks and peaks for which
a standard solution was unavailable, were determined from the
most appropriate standard calibration curve.
