The highest incidence of Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) infection occurs in women of the reproductive age; the risk of maternal transmission of the virus to the fetus or neonate has become a major health concern. The recurrence rate of genital herpes appears to be higher in pregnant than in non-pregnant women, with the likelihood of recurrence increasing as the patient reaches term.Twenty-five percent of women with a history of genital herpes have an outbreak at some point during the last month of pregnancy, and 11–14% have an outbreak at the time of delivery.
