The most significant event is in mid-16th century when King Setthathirat moved his capital from Luang Prabang to Vientiane and ordered construction of Pha That Luang in 1566. It is located about 4km from the heart of Vientiane at the end of That Luang Road, hence its name Pha That Luang. The stupa is built in shape of a grand pyramid and was surrounded by 30 small Stupas. Its base measures 69 metres long and 45 metres high and its top is covered with a thousand pounds of gold leaf.
Inside of Pha That Luang, you can see amazing hand painted art works, which will put your mind in awe. Scattered around the temple well-cared grounds, there are also numerous statues of Buddha and deities. They are all life sized statues which are well crafted and dressed in bright saffron robes.
