flow represents those moments when everything comes together to create a special state of absorption and enjoyment in an activity (Csikszentmihalyi, 1975, 1990). Flow occurs when a person is totally involved in the task at hand. When in flow, the performer feels strong and positive, not worried about the self or failure. Flow can be defined as an experience that stands out as being better than average in some way, in which the individual is totally absorbed in the activity being performed and the experience is very rewarding in and of itself. Csikszentmihalyi (1975) developed the flow concept after investigating human experience during time when everything seemed to come together during the performance of a person 's chosen activity. Included in the early studies were a range of activities, such as surgery, dancing, chess, and rock climbing. Despite the diversity in settings, there was considerable consistency of responses regarding what was felt during moments that stood out as being special in some way.
