In the second experiment, 64 chicks were divided into four groups of similar mean weight (120 g, S.E. 3.8), comprising 16 birds each. Standard broiler starter (from 8 to 28-day-old) and finisher (from 29 to 49-day-old) diets were prepared using maize, soyabean meal, fullfat soya, meat-bone meal, fish meal and vegetable oil as main ingredients (Table 2). A phase application of dietary charcoal was tested in four treatment groups. A control group had no charcoal inclusion in the starter and finisher diets. The second treatment was a starter diet containing 25 g wood charcoal/kg and no charcoal in the finisher diet, the third was starter and finisher diets including 25 g wood charcoal/kg, while the fourth had starter and the finisher diets containing 50 and 25 g wood charcoal/kg, respectively. All birds were housed in individual cages in a complete randomized design. At the end of the experimental period, when the birds were 49-day-old, they were slaughtered to measure carcass yield and abdominal fat weight.
