Those judgments can have two effects on subjective well-being. First is a direct impact, through which a particular interpretation of an environmental feature influences the happiness that is associated with that feature. For example, the judgment that a feature is one with a positive tone can make a person more happy. Second, a moderating influence can occur. It might be the case that the association between the level of a job feature and employee happiness differs when different appraisal judgments have been made. For example, job-happiness correlations may be stronger for individuals who judge the feature in question to be more personally important, and weaker for those who see it as less salient. These possibilities are explored later in this and other chapters.
