Next, partially digested prey items are transported to the
esophagus. Here, compound cilia and strong ciliary currents
further digest food fragments mechanically. Food
then passes via a small chamber (infundibulum, funnel or
stomach) into a complex system of radiating gastrovascular
canals where intracellular digestion occurs. Waste may
then be excreted from the canal system through the anal
pore or transferred back into the stomodeum. Undigested
material in the stomodeum is carried toward the mouth
via ciliary currents and ejected.
