Although it is important to view business processes in 3-D, we often need to resort to 2-D models for a variety of reasons. Here, we mention three of them. First of all, the data sources provided may only allow for a 2-D view, e.g., only one table is provided as input. Second, users expect process models in terms of classical 2-D process modeling languages such as BPMN, UML ADs, Statecharts, BPEL, YAWL, WF-nets, and EPCs. Last but not least, most process mining techniques require flattening the data. Therefore, we advocate the following approach.
