A position of the seat where the longitudinal distance from the backrest to the front door-post was 840 mm, resulting in 350 mm from the front part of the seat cushion to the front door-post, was found to be acceptable for all the subjects. A shorter distance, 750 mm from the backrest and 260 mm from the seat cushion to the front door-post made it more difficult for them. A larger distance of 930 mm made it easier for some of the subjects due to the larger space available,
while more difficult for other subjects because of longer distances to the handles. The times were much increased for the subjects when lifting their feet in or out at the shortest distance (Figure 6), because their feet were hooked at the front
door-post. However, this was less pronounced for the wheelchair users as a group, because two of them used a different procedure where they first lifted in their feet and then their body when entering the car. The time to move the body in and out was slightly increased for all subjects at the 840 and 750 mm distances compared to the one of 930 mm. At 930 mm distance, the ambulant disabled showed an increased time for lifting their feet in or out due to the difficulty to reach the handles.
