STUDENTS’ USE OF TIME
As I review the sections on instructing, demonstrating, and checking for understanding, I realize that it may appear that a substantial part of lesson is devoted to these activities. I hope not. In fact, as we work with our undergraduates we encourage them to do all three (instruct-demonstrate-check for understanding) in less than 60 seconds. This is obviously an arbitrary limit, but it does reinforce the point that the entire cycle can be completed in 1 minute or less for many skills-and be easily understood by the children.
One of the ways we help our undergraduates understand how the children spend time in their classes is through a time analysis. This provides the undergraduates with helpful, objective insights about how long the children spend listening to them talk, for example, as compared to how long the children
