Three sheep and three goats were selected for the direct obser-vations.Animals were selected according to the following criteria:(a)at least three years ofgrazing/browsing
experience in the TDF of the study area, (b) adult females (3–5 years old), (c) non-pregnant,and (d) mean live weight of 34±3 kg.Experimental animals grazed together with a mixed herd of 30 hair sheep (mix of Pelibuey and Blackbelly breeds) and 70 Criollo goats and the flock was herded daily by experienced shepherds using grazing circuits which cov-ered the study area. The number of observed animals was selected considering the number of animals suggested as adequate (n = 3)for grazing behavior (Penning et al., 1993) and preference studies(Parsons et al., 1994), as well as the number of animals used in previous co-grazing behavior studies with sheep and goats (n = 2)(Yiakoulaki and Papanastis, 1995; Animut et al., 2005). Two trained observers were included for each day of observation.
