The killer was initially called the East Area Rapist, then was labeled the Original Night Stalker after a series of murders in Southern California. He was later called the Diamond Knot Killer for using the type of knot to bind two of his victims. Most recently, he has been called the Golden State Killer.
The masked rapist would break into homes while single women or couples were sleeping, and would tie up the man and pile dishes on his back. He would then rape the woman while threatening to kill them if the dishes fell over.
The rapes and countless burglaries escalated in 1978 when he fatally shot U.S. Air Force Sgt. Brian Maggiore and his wife Katie as they walked their dog, authorities believe.
