Using the point load index, it is possible to estimate both compressive and tensile strength of the aggregates. The
study area consists of a wide range of igneous, volcanic, and subvolcanic rocks and tuffs. Fig. 10 shows some microscopic images of studied rocks. Six aggregate samples from the three alluvial fans (one sample from apex and one from toe for each fan) were obtained. Since the
lithological and mineralogical characteristics directly affect the strength
of aggregates, as well as the results of point load tests, we selected 18
rock types for each sample.
