Studies on natural products has been the strength of research efforts at MFU, of which 36% of the budget was given to sustainability projects during the past 3 years. The two studies awarded best in the recent MFU Research Exhibition, “From Research to Community”, on 25 September 2014 were the organic tea project and the development of cosmetic products from tea extracts. In the former researchers from the Tea Institute improved the livelihood of local communities in Chiang Rai by introducing organic tea which has higher market prices. Then, researchers from the School of Cosmetic developed cosmetic products using by-products from the first project to further increase the value chain. This is multi-disciplinary research at its best in enhancing the livelihood of local communities while preserving the nature.
