In Marian,
Indiana, a town of 29,000 residents, there were more than 14,081 gardens – nearly one garden for every two
residents. In 1918 Dallas, Texas had 20,000 gardens that produced more than 17,500 cans of vegetables in a matter
of weeks. [1] At the conclusion of World War I in 1919, gardening declined as people returned to their pre-war lives.
